WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, May 25, 1972, Page 5 BIRD'S EYE VIEW JIM OUA Il What Kind of Fish Us This? I f you have a chance to get out to the small lakes and streams around the cottage country th i s summer y ou ' I I notice a new species of fish becoming more prevalent. They are usually found where the water is reasonably clear, and free of pollution and they are aften accom- p a n i e d by members of the opposite sex. The female of the species carries a bottle of elixir.which seems to re- v i v e these ' fish ' when they return t o the surface from the cold, murky depths. After perusing through some fish books an d not finding a ' mug shot ' I noticed a picture of one in a sports magazine and identified the new 'fish' as a ISC U BAIl diver. SCUBA1is short for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Scuba divers hav e very curious habits. They sometimes do a ritual dance before entering the water. The dance consists of donning black rub- ber and jumping up and down and then t h r o w in g themselves into the water where they can be heard whoop i ng and yelling. The Scuba diver then returns to shore and pro- ceeds to strap on more instruments than you would see i n the cockpit of an airplane. Al1 t h o u gh a scuba diver usuall y on ly dives for about an hour, the p r e p a r a t ion seems to take around three hours. A n o t h e r quirk about scuba divers is t h a t, al though they inhabit the same waters as do fish, a n d al though they seem to move the same andhave habits similar to fish, scuba divers will bombard y ou wi th an extreme amount of verbal ab u se Open Evernp - Tuesday and Thursday IVAN'S (Ladies) HIAIRS"TLING 1400 DUNDAS ST. Another thing I don't Lnderstand Is that although the scuba diver re- sembles a fish, every year after the fishing season starts the diver sur- faces, with a handf ul of lures and hooksand smiles at the fisherman on shore and says, "Hello suckers". C u r i o u s. .. I would be more apt to name the scuba diver after the fish. Dur ing the Spring ice break up scuba fish can be seen migrating to the Peterborough area where they jumpon ice flows and ride them down the Trent River. At thi-s time of the y e ar the scuba fish do not have the ug ly bump deform ity that seems to grow on their backs later during the Sum- mer. I think scuba divers are somewhat ak i n to the Porpoise, because they have been known to a i d m a n . There a r e cases of fishermen losing their belongings when a boat overturned and the scuba diver always managed to return the beer, or part of it.. Some of the h a r d i er species of scuba fish can be seen in the Winter jumping into holes in the ice and disappearing. One fisherman friend of mine who lost his rod and reel to a scuba fish one winter specualted the scuba fish go under the ice to gather up the fishing lines hanging down , ther eby ensuring that the other fish have a restful Winter. Scuba fish cahbe seen near water and if they are not inside their black skin they have blue skin and faces. It would s e e m that these scuba fish are thriving despite the ever growing water pollution and scuba fish are spreading. I haven't heard of too m an y in the prairies yet but maybe the ycantadapt themselves to wheat fields. Size ranges from four feet to over six feet and colouring i s usually b 1la ck. They should only be caught with bare hands and most of them can be enticed to shore by a scantily cl ad female or occasional ly the aroma of some fermented spirits. I don't think there is a bounty for these scuba fish but maybe a neader willI write and set me straight about that. All in aIl they aren't a bad fish but their skins taste like rubber when cooked. Keep your eyes open this summer andlI'm sure you'll chance upon some of these cur ious new scuba fish. Just don' t stick th em wit h a hook -and don't - whatever you do - t el I them who told you about scuba fish. Br aley An easy way to become old may be to be an apple in the orchard of Mrs. Harold Bradley of Ashburn, for she turns apples into little people. Mrs. Bradley has recently revised this old Indian art of making life-like doll s using apples as the heads. "There are many ways of making ap- pie dolîs, you have to experiment and f in d which way you 1ike best, " says Mrs. Bradley. Mrs. Bradley uses different types of apples, but finds it makes little to no difference because each apple, no matter what the skill of the artist, has its own unique way of wrinkling. The first step i n the procedure is to peel the appl e and al low three to four days forit to dry, making sure to let it shrink to the core. A wire body is then wrapped thoroughly in cloth. Each doll has itsown separate feat- ure, and two dolls never turn out the same. "Ilt'seasier to wait and see how the apples dry, then dress the apples to the profession that their face suits most, " she said. Mrs. Bradley makes 'old-people' more frequently than young, as when the apples are dried and wrinkled, the y are cleverly carved into faces with character looking as wellI as feel- ing like human skin. The secret of a nice looking dol1 is detail. Mrs. Bradley even makes the han d s from apples and puts and ties laces on the old lady's bloomers and b o o t i es. Human hair is used for the hair. To complete a dol lin this type of craft may take from four to five days. Unlike the Indians however, Mrs. Bradley dresses her doll s I ike modern old people, including some bail play- ers, amountie and a charming col lec- tion of farmers and their wives. She only makes the dolls upon request. Heard's Taxi 668-3732 Radio Equipped & Direct . Une at Arnold's Market 115 Brock St. N.
