F Decidedly Devious . Andthe signs said, "Where will they relocate the woodchucks?"" , "Birds and jets don't mix! 1, "Aie have seen the enemy and he is us." - and M a y o r D esmond Newman took strong exception to them. The Mayor had come to the meeting not meaning to object. In fact, accord- ing to his w or s h i p , he had not even meant to speak. The scene was a restles.s one; over t h r ee hundred concerned people from the Whitby-Brookl in area had gathered in the Brooklin Town Hall demanding answer s from a mixed panel of govern- ment people arid the POP group on the proposed international airport. The answers to questions posed to t h e g o v ernment reps were typical of g o v e r n men t in their deal ing wi th _the i s sue thus far, wi th nothing conclus- ive - so there was more than a little sarcasm in the questions from the floor. Assessing their innuendos, Whitby An Open letter to Des Newman Dear Mr. Newman; I am a six t een- year-ol d who is very much opposed to the new jet air- port proposaI. App rox imately one year ago, I moved outof the madness of the c i t y . We came to Brooklin because it was pretty, quiet and different from anywhere that I had ever lived b e f o re. When we f i r st moved to my second home (which was in Don M i 1 ls), there was a h or s e farm ac- oss the street. Fo.ur years later i t was torndown for two thirty storey apartment build- ings. At night, we cou Idn't even see the sunset proper- y. Soon lwas sur- rounded by the 401, the Don Valley Park way, Don Mils Rd. &York M i 1 1îs Rd. Here I am surrounded by the country roads, fields of grass and clear springs, and I can even see the sunset every night. On weekends we us'ed the conserva- tion areas, or drove to the coun- t r y to watch kids ride their horses, or have a picnic. This won'tbe pos- sible if the plan y ou favour goes through. I don't w an t to be in an- o t her Los Agnel- es ! Asl1 under- stand i t , Toronto was to have had a green-belt sur- rounding it so that those in the city could drive only a few m i I e s and be out of the con- crete. London, En gland has done th i s , so there is still a retreat for the c i t y dweller. Where wil1l1 this land go with a new airporthere? Are yougoing to over- run this beautiful land with acres of concrete, miles of super highways, and thousands of people? I feel that Toron- to does not need t h is monstrosity. I do agree that M al t on i s over- crowded, but it is the people saying "hel lo" and "good- bye" that are doing this - not the act- ual passengers. Toronto has one of the best aerial capacities there are - even the pilots agree. Why M a y o r Desmond Newman assured the d u b i o u s c r o w ds that the government r e p r e s e n t a tives were not devious. "For t h ey are not paid to be devious, and if they were, they would be caught up wi th, " he added. It w a s small wonder that a rash of heckling punctuated his remarks. M r . N e w m an had suggested, in a sense, that government workers are on thewhole, a true-blue group as indiv- iduals. He also had suggested by inference that the meeting was prejudiced in fav- our of the POP group. Would Mr. Newman have us beliieve that he, as a publ ic advocate of the east- e r n site for t h e airport, came to the meeting unbiased? Wou Id a politician as ambitious as h i s worship have us believe that cor- ruption does not exist inall1 three levels of Canadian Government? The mayor, in thi s instance, is eithernaiveorpoitically devious him- self -and it is our belief that he is the latter. notbuilda termin- al w h e re you say hel lo or good-bye and then board some form of rap- idtransit to carry you to the original Malton ? There would only be half as many people at t h e a irport, and therefore itwould- n't neces sar ily me an congestion. This is work ing- now in England. I'm sure you have thought of this - but pl ease state why you donot th ink this is pos- sible. If we do not stop this, our land will be sol id cement, and if the trend continues , the whole of Canada w.ill be smothered by it. Edftr Mvtue Disey assfie Cireuwa Some say that thi s will br ing weal th to Whitby -what kind of wealth do you want? Surely not the towers, smog, crime and slums tha t accompany such a doing! Many of my friends have nev- er seen a slum area - how lucky they are that in the futureyouwill ed- ucate them! I love this land and the sol- itude it offers me. I also love the city - but in a completely differ- entway. Don't you s e e that here, as a growing Canad- ian, Ihavethe best of two worlds. L y n v i e w C onstruction was one of the f o u r l oc a l contractors invited by council to rebid. Van Hoof Construction L td. at $288,575, William D. Edi'oteorialn Page 2 Taxes Unlimited The budget speech has just been read, a happening welve learned to dread. If you smoke and drink and drive a car, your pay cheque won't go qui te as far. The Government employs you see, some fool-proof psychology, - vicious circle's a better name, and how it works is ail too plain. It seems for us there's no escape, no matter how we save arid scrape. The best of effort's ail in vain, the tax and price-hikes start again! The little man must always pay, he's taxed in every known way. He's taxed from birth to funeral now, and beyond that if they knew how, but life goes on we pay and pay, until it comes our final day. Let's hope we don't end up below - the place where tax-collectors go! by Bruce Duggan 353 Rosedale Dr.
