In the first game played in the Whitby Arena on M a r c h 2 0 , the local squad lost by a 4-2 score. T e r r y 11lingworth led the Woodstock attack with 2 goals, while Harold Craib and Jim O'Bright ad- ded si ngl1 es. The Steelers got goalsfrom Ken Reinhardt and Bill Bridge. The second game of the best of seven series was played in the Wood- stock Civic Centre with the Whitby boys again on t h e short end of the scoresheet. The final score inthis game was 6-3. Jim O'Bright led the Wood- stock team with 3 goals and 3 assists. Terry Il- lingworthadded2 goals and 3 assists, while Scott Talbot added a single. The third game was in the C i v i c C entre in Woodstock on Saturday, March 2 5 t h. T e r r y ll1ingworth and JimO'Bright eacn hadi goal andl assist, while Gary Winch recorded the shut-out. With Woodstock leading 3 games to 0, the fourth game was played in the Whitby Arena on Sunday, March 26th. Exciting gme Th i s was a very exciting game right from the opening whistle. Whitby opened the scoring,at the 8: 30 mark of the first period on an unassisted ,oal by Bill Bridge. Steeler goaltender Bill Mor- rison held the Woodstock team off the scoresheet un t il 7:1 5 of the third period when Scott Talbot b I a s ted ¿ slapshot at the young netminder. Mor- rison played the shot like a pro, but could not hold theblisteringshot in his glove. The puck dropped and rolled into the net. The teams ended regul ation time tied at 1-1. In the ten minute overtime period, both teams had a number of good chances, but coul d n ot cap i ta lize on any of them. With Woodstock ne eding but a tie at home, the Steelers travelled to Woodstock on Tuesday, March 28. T h i n g s vent wrong for the Steelers from the time the bus drivermissed the turn and had to take the next interchange and travel back to the original turn. Poor ice conditions Upon arrival at the Woodstock Arena, the Steel- ers found the ice in terrible shape due to a carni- val held earlier. Woodstock officials assured the W h itby team that the ice would be ready by 8:30, although game time was supposed to be 8:00 p.m. A f ew m i n u tes later, the Steelers were told that the game was being moved to the Civic Cen- tre as the ice was okay over there. When the team a r r i v e d a t the Centre, they found that the time ci o ck was not working properly. The clock was repaired, and the game got star ted at approximatel y 9:00. The first period ended in a scoreless tie, but Da ve MacQueen scored unassisted at 18:07 of the secondperiod. Thiswas all Woodstock needed, as neither team scored in the third. Whitby was out- shot in all three periods, but they did have a num- ber ot good scoring chances late in the third. Shots on goal for the game were 44-23 in fav- our of Woodstock. It was a sad ending for the Steelers as they had won Central Ontario, North- e r n On tario and the Eastern Ontario Champion- ships by defeating Ajax, Lindsay and Belleville in that order. The team under the guidance of Manager "Dutch " Mo r r i son, Coach Joe Rowley and Team Tramner Gond Kinzie, represented the Town of Whitby in a m osft tavourable w ay , showing nothing but good sportsmanship in every game whether they won or las t . The boys of this year's Lasco Steel Pee- W e es will move up to Minor Bantam next season, and will probabl ybring mar e ch ampionships ta the Town of Whitby. With thirty teams in W. M. B.A., equipment is important and costly, requiring a lot of care. Munns Press Star In Toumament The Munn's Press Minor Bantams spent the Easter weekend in Buckingham, Quebec taking part in a Major Bantam Hockey Tournament. The first game of the tournament for the Whitby squad was against the team from Verdun Giroux Quebec. The Munn's Press team won this game 4 - 0. Mike Wolff and Bob Wilson shared the netminding duties for the shut-out, while Joe Mcintyre led the team w i th 2 goal1 s, with singles coming from Robin Barnes and Todd Casey. Following the game, the t o u r n a ment organizers presented medals to the o u t s t a n d ing players in each game. At the con- c 1 u s io n o f the first game, Joe Mcintyre of the Whitby Munn's Press Bantams received the Gold medal, while teammate Todd Casey was presented wîth the Silver medal. The second game of the tournamerit for the Press- men was against the Maniwaki Bantams. The game was tied I - I going into the third period. The Whitby team fought from behind during the entire game, but when the final bell sounded the final score was Whitby 5 - Maniwaki 4. Mark Millar scored the winner for the Vhitby team at 19:40 of the third period. Todd Casey received the Gold medal inthisgame, on the strength of his 3 goals, while Mark Millar got the Bronze medal for his gamewinninggoal. Bob Wilson supplied the great goaltending in this game. Whitby's other goal in this game was scored by Joe Howe. The third game for the Whitby team was against the Gloucester Bantams, who were just too much for the Whitby boys. The final score in this game was Gloucester 6 - Whi tby 1. Robin Barnes scored the lone Whitby goal, and received the ironze medal for his efforts throughout the game. Mike Wolff andBob Wilson shared the nets in the loss. DanKempand Bob Shearer, Manager and Coach respectively, were quite pleased with the manner in which the boys conducted themselves, bath on and off the ice. The residents of Buckingham, Que. and the Buckingham Minor Hockey Assoc. treated t h e W h i t by visitors i1ike Royal ty right from the start, and the Whitby Munn's Press Bantams are looking forward to next spring, when they hope to take part in this tournament once again. Special thanks are in order for the many Whitby fans who travelled to Buckingham Quebec to lend moral and financial support to the team, some of whom did not have boys playing on the team. TOWN OF WHITBY Cancer Week Take Notice That by resolution of the Council of the TownofWhitby the periodof AprilO1th to April 15th, 1972has been proclaimed as "Cancer Week" in and for the Town of Whitby.
