WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, Febru.ary 3rd, 1972, Page 3 WILL THE INFLUX OF TORONTO HOME BUYER AFFECT THE COUNTY TOWN ? There was at one time just no level of compari son between Whi tby and Osh- awa, for Whitby, the County Town, was of a more commanding status on any earl y m a p, a n d outshone Oshawa in almost every way. Then somewhere with the passing of years, Whitby's growth seemed to have been arrested in comparison with her sisters to the e as t and west, perhaps w i t h t h e advent of General Motors in O s h a w a o r through the unanticipated mushroom grow th of metropol i tan Toron- to. Nowbere to grow But now in the '70's while other muni- cipalities are faced with the prevalent problem of running out of growing room, th e County Town, because o f its vast d e v e 1 o p ment potential, appear s once again to be back in a coveted sphere. Almost ineviably development and gr owth mean physical change, and not on ly physical change, but perhaps ad- d i t i onal m od i fications in culture and pace. Two major topographical changes in th i s town have been made - are being made today. The new subdivisions One in the east end of town at Blair Park Plaza is known as the "Whitby Towne" subdivision. Already 145 of the 147 homes in the completed project are occupied, and Lowe Real Estate say that 90% of the subdivision's occupants are Toronto-or i ginated. The other large scale developmen t i s the 595- home project in the west of Whitby at Annes Street. The "Meadows of W est Lynde" is in Phase i with the first occupancy anticipated in only three months. Homes sold from plans The demand for homes at the "Mead- o w s of W e s t L y n de is so great even w h il1 e the homes are still being built, that Phase 2 of the project will be un- dertaken prematurely. Fresh off the palette Con trasting with some of our older Whitby buildings, the model homes in the new subdivisions are fresh off the pa 1 ette of an op-artist. Their bold, clean lines are indeed a contradistinc- t i o n a g a inst the "castleil, Inverlynn, the Lyn de house and the many other h i s t or i c a1 Whi tby homes which have weathered the passing of time for more t h a n a century. True, familiar names of model homes in the subdivisions like "L i on is Gate l", "Coach Home" and IS o u t h ern Comfor t" honour the past, but there is no mistaking the stark mod- ernity of their 1970 architecture. The peopl1 e in the new houses will 1 i v e side b y side with people in com- paratively older, and much ol der homes. They w il1 I number approximately 1, 500 and perhaps as much as 80 to 85% of t h a t n umber will be Toronto-origina- ted. 1t s h o u 1ld al so be remembered that t h e 1y, 5 0 0 newcomers represent only two of the major developments already under construction. Coming from a metropol i tan environ- ment to arelatively small town life, how w i Il they blend with the present status of the County Town ? What effect, if any, wi1l the increas- i n g i n f lux of t h e Toronto-or ientated s o c i e t y have upon the town, and why are they making their homes in Whitby in the first place?... A twofold reason "Many Toronto people have a twofold reason for buying homes in Whitby, " John Reiger, a local realtor estimated. "N u m b e r one, it is cheaper to buy h e r e ", he explained, "and secondly, t h e time factor in travelling into Tor- onto from the east end of Metro or from Whitby makes little difference.
