WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, December 9th, 1971, Page 5 Four Questions Succeed In Liquor Vote. Public apathy, rather than a strong turnout of the "drys" once again affec- ted theWhitby liquor vote last Saturday when only a si im margin of 22% attended the voting polis. Four of the eight questions under the I iquor licence act succeeded with posit- ive votes: "Are you in favour of govern- ment stores for the sale of beer ?, "Are you in favour of Ontario wine stores for the sale of Ontario wine ?", Are you in favour of the sale of beer and wine un- der a dining room licenced premises with food available?i, "Are you in fav- our of the sale of liquor under a dining 1 o un ge licence for consumption on the premises with food available?" OH, NO!! IT JUST WASN'T OUR WEEK This week just wasn't "our week " at th e "Whitby Free Press" - and please don't anybody take offence to our phrase- ology. "Thisweek" meaning the interim of the past seven days, and not the news- paper known by that name. In fact this week was "Oh, no! week" at your local newspaper. it all started with a meeting of coun- cil thatreallywasn't. No, not the usual k i n d . It seems that Monday night past w a s o n e of those ominous "f ifth Mon- days". Under the new system, regular meetings of council are on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month, with the Ad- m i n i s trative and the Operations com- mitteesmeeting on the ist and 3rd Mon- days. Well thismonth had five Mondays, hence no council meeting. Then on Tue sday night when the s p r i n kiing of merchants and business 22% POLL TURNOUT An official report of the Whitby liquor v o t e \wil1l1 b e promulgated in the next edition of the "Ontario Gazette." Last vote held in 1968 In 1968, following the amalgamation of the town and township, a vote on ail q u e s t ions under the Liquor Licence Actwasheld in the township areas, and a t t h a t time, al 1 questions except the I iquor bal lot were defeated. It is i n t eresting to note that a suc- cessful ballot does not necessarily mean t h e r e a lization of that which is being sought, as the liquor store voted on in 1968has gone no further than the ballot box. men waited expectantly in council cham- bers for the progress to be reported at the r e g u I a r m eeting of the downtown action committee, the "Free Press " was there, pencil poised and waiting for ac- t ion. But the action committee had decided not to hold the meeting a week' ago and didn't bother to inform us. Here we were with not much to rep- o r t in the way of news and stil empty p a g e s to fi, when our conscientious cameramanBill Stannett regretfully in- formed us that the film we had left him for processing was a "Idud"i. "Oh, no! " was the immediate reac- tion. Ali those pictures! So if Whitby Arts lncorporated, the W h itby Minor Soccer Association, the "Free Press" carriers and others are wondering what happened to those phot- os we carefully lined up, well, now you Parade Route D a i n t y m a j orettes, high stepping b a n d s, colourful floats and capering clowns wîllonce againwind through W h i t by streets for the County Town's Annual Santa Cl.aus Parade.
