WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, November 11th, WHITBY GIRL TEACHES MODERN JAZZ & TAP DANCING TO CLASS 0-F 65 1971, Page 5 -by lim Quail There was a time - and not so long a go either - that dancing was frowned u p on and even forbidden by the church but it seems times have changed and so has the church. But then with such a pretty instruc- tressasJoy Sarnanski, the church could not possibly have said no. And so every Thursday night for the last two years, there h as been dancing in the Saint Mark's Church House. t h o u g h a member, Joy does not agree w i th the association in some of their methods and especially with "their out- dated costumes. " loy's School Of Dancing Joy Samanski, 19, teaches tap dan- c i n g as wellas modern jazz and baton t w i r 1li ng. Gleaming eyes and twirling feet tell a story of young girls, ages five to f i f tee n, wi th thoughts of some day becoming professional dancers and in the popular thirties tradition, "mak- ing it big". Not ail students have aspirations of making the big time. Some just come to have fun, according to Joy. That's ail rightwith Joybecause she enjoys teach- ing no matter why the student wants to learn. The only thing that seems to up- set Joy i s when some mothers drop off their daughters and it's obvious to Joy they are only looking for a babysitter. "But", she sighed, "I guess that's part of the business." An d so Saint Mark's Church House r i ngs with, "Straight line, stand talI, feet together. ""The hip movement makes the whole step. " "O.K. girls, let's try it together once more. " Joy is not the kind of teacher to just bark o u t commands and expect them to be carried out. She gets in with the girls and leads them rather than push- ing. By following her steps, the stu- dents can see just how the steps or sequence should be done. Somehow the practicing is more like fun than work. The fun i s evident to any onlooker who h a p p ens to drop in to the cllasses which run from 5:30 til 9:30 p. m. The students appear relaxed and Joy says, "Some girls just enjoy moving and dan- cing. "As for the boys, they're welcome but none have shown up yet. Joy started teaching three years ago and she now belongs to the British As- s oc i a t ion, Teachers of Dancing. This has prompted Joy to cast a critical eye at the costumes found in the dance theatre today and she explains, "Ilwouldlike to see theatrical costume houses update their costumes. " Motion Picture Themes lessons Updating tap dancing required a lot of imagination and talent but as Joy re- marked, "Tap dancing is far behind the times , and I th ink childrens' dance should be updated as well. " To inject a modern flavour into dancing Joy is, "using th emes from recent motion pic- tures. " Her love of dancing has inspired Joy to convince two friends at Sheridan to do a f i 1lm on dan c ing. The fashion course ha s taught her enough that she n ow d o e s ail her own costuming with b 1 a c k predominantly in use, because, "Black is my favourite colour. " While goi ng to school helps in the costume department, it hinders the en- tertainment department, and Joy is con- stantly turning down offers to have her g i r 1 s d an c e at social functions. Teaching dancing at your ovvn school is a lot of work and Joy added, "I have to say my parent s have helped me incred- ibly. " Dancing is a big part of her life and Joy remarked, "My social life is n i I!!" As for a boyfriend she added, "I have no time for one. " Some of the students look very hope- ful and Joy pointed out a couple of girls and explained, 111 have a couple of girls Il'mputting in baton competition and one girl in p ar ticular who is very keen on d a n c i n g o r figure skating. "On June 16 the students will hold a reci tal at the Whitby Centennial Building. As for future Joy hopes to graduate a n d go on to stay in business for her- se I f. If that's not possible, she hopes to work with costuming in Stratford or r e turn to school at York University to study choreography. At present Joy has 65 students, which is the largest class she has had to date. Tap Dancing Coning Back The lessons are 75e for a half hour and each group, tap, modern jazz or baton has 30 classes in a year. Tap dancing is obviously Joy's fav- our'i te and she says, "Tap dancing is c o m ing back. In Pari s i t's back in the discotheques. The 1930's to 1940 era is c o m i n g back both in fashion and dan- cing. " " Ofcourse the bumpy road to success isnevereasy, and Joy advises, "If you want tomake it, you have to really stick with it. " So und a d vice from a girl who.has already made it!
