MOTORING WITH MIKE BURGESS Undoubtedly one of the most used, abused, an d frustrating of modern in- ventions common to all nationalities, professions and sexes is the automobi le. It has become a necessity rather than a luxury, and l'm sure that most of us to whom this applies have each had his orhershare of flat tires, break-downs and on the b r i g h t e r side, the secret d e s ir e t o share the spoils of victory with the greats like Sterling Moss and Dennis Hulme. In this column i am not going to dwell on the great household names, but rather try to f ol I ow the local enthusiasts in- vol ve d in racing, rallying, and other forms of automotive competition; with a few tips for the backyard mechanics who like to use the personal touch. Th e governing body for Auto-sport in C a n a da is the Canadian Automobile Sports Clubs Inc. (C. A. S. C. ). In On t- ario, we have forty-three member clubs. Atthepresenttime, the only recognized c 1 u b in this area is the Oshawa Motor Sport Club. Its membership's activities range f rom formula racing at Mosport torallying, soloevents, drag, and even slot car racing. So regardless of whet- h e r you are a competitor, a spectator or an armchair enthusiast who likes to a t t end the odd wine and cheese party, the re is an act ivity to suit you, and chances a r e y ou'll probably see your neighbour there. Take for example the 1, 000 Island's Regional Championship Slalom race hel d in Kingston last month. Eight members of O.M.S.C. c ompeted in one of the fastest an d most challenging events of t he year. One of these entrants, Ruth Halliday, wrapped up the ladies' cham- pionship for the third successive year. Congratulations to a fine woman, racer and mother! Detailed listings of upcoming events canbe found under "Sports Car Calen- dar " in the automobile section of the 'Globe and Mail'. Don't forget that the cold weather is on our door steps and a few dollars s p ent w is ely on plugs and points will save a tow truck or taxi bilIl when a col d morning catches you unprepared. More on t hi s subject next week. Until then, 'Happy Motoring.' ANGUS SHORTT Ducks Unlimited GOOSE NESTING PLATFORMS Giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) readily accept nesting platforms. Two of many designs are shown. A - moulded fibreglass unit mounted on metal legs. B - section of 55 gallon oil drum on wood platform, with angle-iron stand. Three units can be made from one oil drum which should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Best results are from platforms 3 to 5 feet above water, not too far from shore and 50 to 75 yards apart. A layer of marsh grass or hay should be put in nest unit as the birds will not accept empty units. Wooden platforms accommodate the male at the nest and are know as "gander landers".
