...Baseball WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, September 23rd, 1971, Page Il bats, gloves sadly put in the closet for another year... Whitby's hopes for another Prov- incial Baseball title to add to the 1970 triumph of the K of C Tykes fell by the waysideonSunday when Stratford el- i minated the Whitby squad 11-8 in a game whi ch drew a huge and enthusias- tic crowd to Peel Park. Thrilling build-up to final less Whitby had won the series opener the previous week in a thrilling 10-9 contes t , but lost the second game pl ayed at Stratford's Dufferin Park the previous Saturday. That second encounterwas another tension packed affair, whichwent nine innings before Stratford won out 7-6. Many observers feel that this was the game that lost the series for the Whitby club, as the victory gave that magic ingredient of sport cal led "momentum" to the Strat- ford squad. The K of C's came through with 13 hits in Saturday's lively contest, but continued the loose type of play ex- perienced by fans in their last several games, coming up with repeated er- rors which cost them dearly. Petryshyn pitched best of season Fred Petryshyn was on the mound for the K of C's and pitched his best game of the season, and was vir tuailly untouchable throughout the first four innings, but the K of C's were guilty of giving away unearned runs to the Stratford club, whowere alert to cap- italize on the opposition's mistakes. Paul Brown star of the day Ma r k MacDonald and Peter Foran b o t h h ad three s ingles, Greg Tush- inghamhad a triple, and John Parrott, Rick Kay and Ford Definney had sin- gles. But the big hitter of the day for W h i t by, was Paul Brown who c am e through wi th a singl e, doubl e and home- run. In the bottom of the ninth, Stratford scored to win the game'and set the scene for the thrilling third and decid- ing game at Peel Park on Sunday. jý Eno APPIUr!LIIIES1E U1 "You're strength and power remind me of the electrical appliances at Brockway. Stratford took over at bat S t r atford , however, had al so brought along their "batting eyes", & countered with six runs in the top of the second to turn the K of C's com- fortable 6-1 lead into a 7-6 deficit. In the third and fourth innings, both clubs added single runs, and the fifth was scoreless, the first scoreless in- ning of the high-scoring game. In the sixth, Stratford added a pair for an 11-8 score. At this point, the K of C's hitting, which had been their strong point all season began to sputter, and Stratfordwas able to hold the usually high-scoring Whitby club off the score- b o a r d in t h e final three innings for their 11-8 victory. Whitby gains hope with a hit in the 9th.. E o th clubs had eleven hits. Mark MacDonald, who was knocked out of the pi tcher 's box in the second inn ing, had, however, another big day at the p I a t e , leading his club with a triple and three singl es. Fred Petryshyn who relieved MacDonald, came up with a pair of· singles. Paul Brown added a triple, while Rick Kay, Peter Foran, Ford Definney and John Parrott added singles. Although the defeat and elimination from further O. B. A. play was a dis- appoi n tment to the players and of- ficialIs, the club can take satisfaction in the fact they won the E. O. B. A. Tyke A Championship. K of C's to play Tyke invitational The K of C's will be involved in the Oshawaand District Tyke Invitational Tournament. In past years, Oshawa, Cobourg, Port Hope, andWhitby clubs have competed in the post-season event inother years, but no definite infor- mation is yet available on this year's tourney.
