The building was built three years after the founding of the brancçh and oPened in 1875. Whitby's mayor George Young Smith had a law office on one of the upper floors. The Domninion B3ank was the only building to survive the great fire of 1877, which destroyed the entire business block on the easî side of Brock St. (fromn Dundas to Coiborne streets). The Oct. 16 fire began when a man dropped a tray of lighted lamps in Thomas Lawler's store behind the bank. The first manager to serve in the new building was Henry Betts Taylor. John H. Ferry,, graridson of Whitby's founder Peter Perry, also served as manager from 1926 to 1939. The building was originaily ail red brick. In 1928, the first floor walls were painted brown and the upper floors in ivory. In 1940j the bank underwent a major renovation, at which time the waJlsiof the first floor were covered with stucco. In the 1970s, the building was painted olive green, the real estat company's color. In 1980, the bricks were carefully cleaned chem- ically, restoring much of the origi- nal appearancç to this fine old building. The Dominion Bank moved iflto ils new building, east of the old one, in 1970. Shea Real Estae and later Family Trust occupie;d the building for many years.
