Reform candidate Longfield runs on community record andparty vision By JUDI LONGFIELD Liberal Party Candidate The people of Whitby-Ajax must consider two things when deciding how to vote on Monday. They must consider which of the lo- cal candidates is best able to represent their views in Ottawa, and which of the political parties best reflects their vision for Canada in the 21" century. I have a demonstrated record of effective community representation and involvement and place it before you for your judgement. I have successfully served my community over the last number of years: i have a stake in this community. I live here. I work here. I have raised my family here. We have the same hopes and fears. If elected, i will put the people of Whitby-Ajax first in Ottawa. The Liberal Government has strong rec- ord of balanced, pragmatic, and solution ori- ented management of the Nation's affairs. On the Economy: Canadians have good reason to be confi- dent about their future. Companies are hiring. Houses are selling, and new houses are being built. Canada's economic prospects are among the best in the world, with private sector analysts pre- dicting the creation of between 300,000 and 350,000 jobs this year. Inflation is at its lowest level in 30 years, protecting Canadians' buying power and liv- ing standards. And mortgage rates have declined more than three percentage points since January 1995. That translates into $2,400 a year in savings on a $100,000 mortgage. And that means a lot more money in the hands of Ca- nadian families. On Health Care: The Liberal Government has rejected calls for user fees. We have maintained the integrity of the Canada Health Act, blocking Alberta's ex- periments with two-tiered Medicare. We remain firmly committed to the five ba- sic principles of health care in Canada. It must be universal, accessible, comprehen- sive, portable, and publicly administered. A Liberal Government will introduce uni- versal public coverage for medically neces- sary drugs. A Liberal Government will offer tax relief to Canadians who care for aging relatives at home. On Crime: The Liberal Government's approach to justice issues emphasizes prevention. That's why we established the Nation Crime Prevention Council - which is looking at what leads children to a life of crime, and how to stop the pattern. i support tougher penalties for serious crimes. Snyder believes tax relief will change make society better By FRANK SNYDER Progressive Conservative Candidate The decision to run for election was reached because of my belief that society can be changed for the better. An individual can make a difference through involvement and responsibil- ity. Government can be made better with hard work and dedication. So many Canadians fear for their futures and those of their children. How- ever, I believe these fears need not be realized. As a local business man, consumer and tax- payer, i share in the discomfort and troubles of citizens of Whitby-Ajax. I identify with families struggling under high taxes and financial inse- curity. I feel for the university students who suf- fering under education cutbacks and dismal employment prospects. When i graduated from university in 1982, being in the midst of a reces- sion, I too felt uncertain about my future. Like many ather Canadians, i want to ensure that as I get oIder, i will be secure in my retirement. Canadians have suffered too long under irre- sponsible government spending. Canadians deserve to keep the money that they have earned. We have been taxed to death, yet the Liberals have forgotten that the money belongs to the taxpayers and not to the whims of a gov- ernment. Canadians watched helplessly as the Liberals brutalized our social programs, our CPP, our schools, and our health care system with their cuts in provincial transfer payments. Canadians deserve more than endless tax in- creases and eroding social programs! For the past three and a half years, Jean Cha- rest has listened to Canadians. He has heard their concerns and developed a plan for Cana- da's future. If elected, we will provide immediate tax relief, reintroduce fundamentals back into federal job creation strategies, guarantee that the CPP is there for all Canadians, and ensure that our children receive quality education. We will eliminate the deficit within the first mandate, restore funding to the provinces for education and health care, and get Canadians back working. I am running for election out of a sense of commitment to both my children and to Canada. I have chosen Jean Charest and the Progres- sive Conservative Party because of their vision. I seek to ensure that the federation remains in- tact and strong, so that Canadian values are not sacrificed, and so that Canadians themselves MORE CANDIDATES NDP Candidate Karen Dolan: Page 8 CAP Candidate Robert Radford Page 8.
