WHITBYi L IeMg.yLREE ietters Declining vote seen as protest an( The following is an idea which I think Canadians would be interested in: "Ma- jority of Canadians vote against the sys- tem!" Wouldn't that be a shocking front page headline. The act of voting is a privilege as well as a right. It must not be taken lightly. How many of us vote for a particular po- litical party because our friends or fam- ily do;' or vote for a party without Says McTeague set up Dan·McTeague was "set up" by the Liberal Party, by a front page story in the Toronto SUN 04/26/97. (Re: errone- ous academic credentials.) This is Dan's reward for voting against the infamous Bill C-41 and working with Senator Anne Cools to force changes that we, the voters, want for the good of the children of divorce. It is okay to say that the issues surrounding Bill C-41 like emotional abuse and poverty, are sexy; but heaven help us if anyone whom thinks child abuse is wrong (like Dan McTeague) and Bill C-41 does little or . nothing to help children of divorce and that Alan Rock's stacks committees to push through feminists agendas (my words) then look out you'll pay the price. Who leaked this story? The real issues affecting children of divorce are being suppressed. I thought the Toronto SUN would be more supportive; however, I guess they sold out for a flashy headline. Why bring up something that was on some literature in 1993? Who leaked this information? Dan has offended some Liberals; so what. What is really more important, selling out your values and principles, while children of divorce suffer? The Federal Liberal Party supports a process that abuses children. This should be the headline! Here's the short version, being for- warded across Canada and beyond. Lib- eral MP Dan McTeague has blamed his staff for overstating his academic creden- tials in both his campaign literature and several parliamentary guides. McTeague, who represents the riding - of Ontario in the Ajax-Pickering area, claimed in a 1993 campaign leaflet he had a bachelor of arts and a masters of economics from the University of To- ronto. In fact, the former public rela- tions officer has only a bachelor of arts, which he received from the school in 1986. However, the 1996 Canadian Parlia- mentary Guide, the 1997 Canadian Par- liamentary Handbook and 1996/97 Inside Ottawa Directory all state that McTea- gue has completed a post-graduate de- gree. Dan McTeague is one of the very few Liberals whom deserve to be re- elected/elected. The stench of the status quo concerning children of divorce starts at or near the top of the Federal Liberal Party. National unity is passe; children of di- vorce suffering because of the current ad- versarial divorce process must not be suppressed. New Canadians sworn in to vote Canada is opening its doors to 96,000 new citizens, in- cluding minor criminals, just in time for the coming Federal election, immigration staffers say. Mass citizenship swearing-in ceremonies are being held nation-wide to process thousands of new Canadi- ans so they can vote on June 2. Among those taking the oath are criminals convicted of minor offences, immi- gration staffers say. The Citizenship Act says criminals not convicted of an indictable offence in the last three years are eligible for citizenship. New Canadians can vote even if they've been sworn in up to the day of the election, according to Elections Canada officials. Are the Liberals looking for help? Yours truly, S. We have missed your paper very much in our household. Good luck and best regards, Tanyss MacDonald knowing what its policies and platforms are? Many people do not have time to in- vestigate a party's policies and plat- forms and simply don't vote. Some citizens don't vote because none of the political parties appeals to them. If you decline your vote, your vote is registered as a vote against the system. The official way to decline your vote is: Go to your polling station. Do not mark your ballot whatsoever. Hand it to the polling officer saying that you decline your vote and ask him or her to put it the special envelope for declined votes. It will be counted. It is surprising the number of people who don't know that they can decline * Physical inactivUiy " Mals or Post Monopausal Female " Personalor Famlly Msory of " Hort Bisease t message their vote and it will be officially counted against the system. If every- body who didn't vote (for one reason or another) would take a few minutes to go to his or her respective polling station and decline his or her vote, maybe the system would listen to us. As George Jean Nathan, a 20th cen- tury philosopher once said, "Bad offi- cials are elected by good citizens who do not vote." I have sent this letter to other Ontario newspapers in order to inform as many people as possible of their option to de- cline their vote. I would very much ap- preciate it if you would publish this letter. Josh Knechtel e Ihgh Chelosterul S1igb Blosi Pressure 0 Smoker Guest Speakers: Dr. R. Alessandrini, Cardiologist Dr. R.
