- John Harkness was born at Whitby in 1913. From 1937-1972 he was a supervisor at the Ontario Hospital and in the 1950s and 1960s he was president of the Civil Service Association at the Hospital. Harkness was the founding president of the Port Whitby Ratepayers' Association and managed a ladies' softball team. His other community involvements included the Men's Club at St. John's Anglican Church and the Vimy Ridge Loyal Orange Lodge in Whitby.
Harkness died at Oshawa on 24 April 1972 and is buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery. - Date of Original
