- Arthur Morton was born at Newcastle, UK on 5 October 1917. He served during the Second World War in the Merchant Marine. Upon moving to Canada in 1954, Morton first worked for Dowty Equipment Ltd. in Ajax and then as manager for Rainbow Products in Whitby. He later worked at Ontario Hospital, Whitby.
Morton was an avid sportsman, excelling at track, soccer, and cricket. He organized the Whitby-Ajax Industrial Hockey League and was president of the Whitby-Ajax Industrial Softball League. Morton coached and managed minor hockey, track and field, and lacrosse. In 1976, he was an assistant torch bearer at the Montreal Summer Olympics. For his dedication to amateur sports, Morton was awarded the Olympic Commemorative Medal, membership in the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame (1999), Official of the Year for Ontario (1991-2), special achievement in track and field (1993), and member of the Track and Field Wall of Fame in Ottawa (1995).
Morton died at Whitby on 28 September 2010 and is buried in Thornton Cemetery. - Date of Original
