- John Campbell was born at Newark, New Jersey, on 2 June 1794. His father, Hugh Campbell, served as British soldier in the American Revolutionary War and settled at Kingston about 1796.
John Campbell was elected to Parliament for the County of Frontenac in 1830 and moved to Whitby Township in 1832. In 1839, along with Daniel S. Way, he laid out the plan for the village of Winchester which changed its name to Brooklin in 1847. He built a grist mill and store in Brooklin and was one of its leading businessmen for more than 35 years. He died at Brooklin on 22 December 1876 and is buried in Groveside Cemetery in Brooklin. - Date of Original
