- Black and white photograph, c. 1901. Mr. Ebenezer James Thornton (1856-1907) and Mrs. Ebenezer James Thornton (Edith Gross) (1869-1959).
The 10th and youngest child of Rev. Robert Hill Thornton, the first Presbyterian minister in Whitby Township, Ebenezer James Thornton was born in Whitby Township, Canada West, on November 2, 1856. He was an official at the head office of the Dominion Bank and left the head office to be the manager of the Whitby branch of the bank from 1893 until his death in 1907. While in Whitby, he rented a home from Mrs. John Ham Perry, the house at 110 Centre Street North.
On July 2, 1898 at Whitby, Mr. Thornton married Edith Gross, daughter of Whitby hardware merchant George Conrad Gross. They had a family of two girls.
Mr. Thornton died at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Gowans, in Toronto, Ont. on April 27, 1907 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
His wife Edith was born at Whitby on March 25, 1869 and died at Toronto on October 29, 1959 at the age of 90. - Date of Original
