- George Phillips was born in Prince Edward County, Ontario on November 7, 1916 and was educated at Brock Street Public School in Whitby. He worked for some years at General Motors in Oshawa. A keen sportsman, he played baseball in Oshawa and was a member of many hockey teams in Whitby including the Whitby Intermediates which won the Provincial Intermediate Championship C. 1939. He enlisted in the Spring of 1940 and went overseas the following August. He was trained as a gunner-bombardier in Petawawa and overseas. He received a promotion to the non-commissioned rank of sergeant in January of 1943 in his unit, the Four Canadian Field Regiment, Second Field Battery in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was killed in action in Belgium on October 6, 1944.
