Black and white negative showing Hugh Simms (left), the first person to enter the Beard-Growing Contest, and William Hurley, contest manager, standing in front of a contest poster. The Beard-Growing Contest started on 14 February and the judging occurred on 2 July 1955.

Whitby celebrated its Centennial of Incorporation as a town from 26 June to 3 July 1955.
