- Notes
- Born in 1824 near Doon, taught at Waterloo's Central school for five years. Served as a provincial land surveyor and assessor for Woolwich township for seven years. He then opened a small general merchandising business called Moses Springer and Company. Founder and first President of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company and one of the founders of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada.
In 1852 he was appointed magistrate in Waterloo. When Waterloo became a village in 1857, he was elected Reeve and served on and off for 12 years until 1876, when Waterloo was incorporated as a town with Springer as its first Mayor.
He served as MPP for Waterloo from 1867 until 1881 when he was appointed county sheriff. He served in this post until his death in 1889. - Date of Original
