They had to defeat the Guelph Royals in a best-of- three series to qualify for the tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Then it was off to Windsor for the OBA tournament, held Aug. 12-14. In the first two rounds on Friday, Aug. 12, the team handily defeated Missis- sauga North and Kendal Eagles with scores of 9-2 and 11-2, respectively. The next day, the competition was fierce, according to a news release. In Round 3, Waterloo's defence was razor sharp, and Declan Uniac pitched a complete game to help win 1-0. Brian Letson, an assis- tant coach, said in the statement that this 2022 team is the best defensive unit he's ever seen. In Round 4, the hard-hit- ting London West Tincaps handed Waterloo their only loss of the tournament by a score of 12-7. But they bounced back and defeated the East York Bulldogs af- ter two extra innings 9-7 and earned a bye into the fi- nal. In the final, ace pitcher Sam Clay allowed only one run by the Erindale Cardi- nals, and the Tigers took the game and the champi- onship with a final score of 3-1. "This is the hardest road ever to an OBA champion- ship and the 2022 boys did it. It took contributions from every player!" said head coach Aksell Leiva. NEWS IN IT TO WIN IT!
