After seeing more than twice the demand for personal training during the COVID-19 pandemic, Syd Vanderpool is doubling down on his fitness business, branch- ing out to Elmira with a new stu- dio set to open in July. After 15 years in Kitchener, Vanderpool said expansion of his SydFIt Health Centre is needed to accommodate the increase, also citing the need for some of his elite athletes to have a training fa- cility that's removed from city life. The former pro boxer, who's coached the likes of Natasha "The Nightmare" Spence, "Dangerous" Denton Daley and Kitchener's own two-time Olympian Mandy Bujold, said that when he was competing, he often attended training camps outside the urban area in a quieter spot that could provide some serenity during an intense training regimen. "I just love the environment of Elmira -- it's close enough to Kitchener and Waterloo but enough outside the city where they can relax and really have time for themselves," said Van- derpool, who's currently working with world-class Canadian box- ers Kaitlyn Clark and Jordyn Konrad, among others. The new studio can provide temporary housing for athletes in two suites upstairs but is in- tended to serve fitness enthusi- asts and beginners alike, Vander- pool said, noting that competitive athletes only make up about 20 per cent of his clientele. His second gym location in a former real estate office at 5 Church St. E. will be a closer for some members who are already driving to Kitchener from the outskirts of Waterloo region and beyond. Up until about three years ago, the makeup was half male, half female. Now it's about 60-40, women to men, Vanderpool said. "A lot of people, especially women, are finding how being stronger helps them in their ev- eryday lives," he said. The SydFIT Health Centre in Kitchener currently serves about 300 members, with 100 exclusive private training memberships now available at the Elmira stu- dio, which will also offer pain management and wellness ser- vices including electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, massage therapy, osteopathy, naturopa- thy, yoga, exercise therapy and posture and movement screen- ing. Elmira might have other gyms, but Vanderpool says high- ly skilled professional trainers set his apart. There are private, semiprivate and small group classes available. "For us, we really do have a great personal training service because it's so inclusive to every- thing -- just being able to provide a holistic, personal experience for everybody. Really, it's about the elite experience in terms of the trainers and service," he said. "We grow our members' health mentally, physically and emo- tionally, and then we go out and help build the community," add- ed Vanderpool, emphasizing that his team plans on providing a lively presence in Elmira. "We're building an army here," he said. Visit sydfithealth.ca for more.
