- Mary A. Johnston was the first female principal of a Waterloo public school. She began her career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse on Bearinger Road in 1950. She went on to be the vice-principal at Empire and Centennial public schools. She was the principal at Brighton, Winston Churchill, Keatsway and MacGregor public schools. She also served as the president of the Waterloo Historical Society and was involved in many other organizations, including the Federation of Women's Teachers' Associations of Ontario.
