The extra cameras will be deployed in three units: 19 for special response offi- cers, four for canine officers and 20 for community engagement officers. Police have run a pilot program since last June, using 75 bodycams and 36 vehi- cle cameras. The pilot was supposed to end in December, but police had asked to ex- tend it until Oct. 31 of this year, and to add 170 more body cams for a total of 245. The police board approved the extension to Oc- tober last month, but balked at adding that many more cameras to what is intended to be a test program. At its meeting last week, the police board approved 43 addi- tional bodycams. The units where the new cameras will go are often involved in use of force and crisis intervention incidents. Including them in the pilot would allow police to bet- ter evaluate the effectiveness of the body- cams. "That's for further evaluation in some high-risk situations," said Supt. Shaena Morris. The expansion, and the use of camera footage, will help in the assessment of pro- cedural adherence, investigations of pub- lic complaints and training reviews. "Ultimately, those lead to improvement in our quality of service," said Morris. Until now, the north patrol and traffic branch were the only units to have the cameras. The body cam pilot expansion will cost $81,691 plus taxes, paid for out of the budget for the pilot.
