The playground by the Eby Farm in Wa- terloo Park is being overhauled this year to create a fully accessible "universal play- ground" concept. JUST THE FACTS • The current playground is aging and does not meet the needs of all visitors to the park. • The city applied to the Ontario Trilli- um Foundation's Community Building Fund last fall and learned in January that a $380,000 grant was approved to help up- grade the play area with an accessible rub- berized surface, which will be the first of its kind in the city. • Project timelines are tight because the grant requires the project to be completed within a year and the installation of rub- berized playground surfacing is limited to dry, warm weather. Tendering for con- struction will be done shortly and work will start as soon as feasible. • The new playground would be located adjacent to the existing playground that's slated to remain and would be linked by a hard-surface pathway, according to draw- ings. Some elements of the existing play- ground are planned to stay but will be closed off during construction. • A consultant was already hired to cre- ate the design, which includes shade struc- tures, benches, rubber and artificial turf hills with climbers, a multilevel play struc- ture, playhouse, accessible spinner, farm animal play sculptures, butterfly shade structures and relocating the existing pig sculptures to a new sand pit. • More info and the comment forum can be found at engagewr.ca.
