LIMITED-TIME OFFER! 59%OFF SPRING BONUSGIFT Legendary blues musician Mel Brown brought the sound of the Mississippi Delta to Waterloo Region. And although Mel him- self is gone, his legacy lives on. In celebra- tion of that legacy, the region will be home to the inaugural Mel Brown Music Festival & Symposium, happening May 27 through 29 at The Jazz Room, Maxwell's Music House, Kitchener Public Library and TheMuseum. The driving force behind the celebration involves a group of musicians and scholars, including Carlos Morgan and Dr. Lee Wil- lingham, whose aim is to highlight Mel Brown's music and influence in its full rich- ness and context. "The inspiration behind the Mel Brown Music Festival & Symposium is to celebrate and acknowledge the musical contributions of the late, great bluesman, Mel Brown," said Morgan. "The event will feature and highlight Black music and artists in the Waterloo Re- gion and address anti-Black racism in mu- sic education, higher learning institutions and the music industry in Canada." Morgan, who received a master of arts degree in community music at Wilfrid Lau- rier University in 2021, is organizing the fes- tival alongside Willingham, a professor and director of the community music and un- dergrad program at Laurier. "Dr. Willingham plays a most important and significant role in the development of the festival," Morgan said. "Dr. Willingham wrote the grant for the festival, is co-ordi- nating and overseeing the festival and as- sembled a committee to take care of various logistics of the three-day event." I'm a Laurier grad too, and a former art instructor there as well, so I was delighted to learn that the university's venerable music department is supporting a festival in cele- bration of this kind. I'm so delighted, in fact, that my podcast co-host Sara Geidlinger and I are recording a three-episode special of our "Bonn Park" podcast all about the Mel Brown Music Festival & Symposium. During our fascinating conversation with Morgan, he explained how the sympo- OPINION EVENT TO CELEBRATE LEGACY OF LATE BLUES MUSICIAN MARSHALL WARD Column See - page 13 HOST A STUDENT FROM SPAIN Open your home to a Spanish teen June 30 - July 28 • Earn $900 It's a fun experience for all ages!
