The majority of funds will be used for the Water- loo Park Circuit, including the construction of a perim- eter walkway in the west end of the park. Public en- gagement commenced in 2021 and the first phase of construction is scheduled for fall of this year. The park circuit project includes the design and construction of the new pe- destrian bridge over Laurel Creek, as well as upgrades to the Bauer lot and the re- location of the existing op- erations yard from the lot. According to a staff re- port, the pedestrian bridge will provide a connection between the Bauer Lot and Father David Bauer Drive amenities and the Silver Lake precinct. Upgrades to the Bauer Lot will improve parking efficiency and sur- face conditions and create an overflow parking area that can be used for recre- ational functions, it says. The urban forest strate- gy ($136,000) will bench- mark current resources, set directives and establish targets to sustain a healthy tree canopy. "I'm not going to throw a number out there," said city parks director Jeff Sil- cox-Childs at Monday's meeting (Feb. 28), acknowl- edging targets set by other jurisdictions within the re- gion. "They're aggressive and they're high, and they should be, but to achieve that, it's almost impossible to do it strictly on public lands," he said. "We really have to look beyond city parks and green space to private property owners." Park and street tree in- ventories are underway as part of the city's asset man- agement planning. A re- quest for proposals will be released this spring to de- velop the urban forest strategy. The city is also planning to construct its second leash-free dog park ($228,000) this fall within the city's West Side Em- ployment Lands on Copper Street. The new park will include fenced areas, sig- nage, seating, shade trees and in-ground garbage and dog waste units. Public engagement will be part of the process, ac- cording to city staff.
