Temporary art installations will pop up in parks around Waterloo ahead of Canada Day to encourage small family picnics, a news release said on Wednes- day, May 12. The city's arts and culture manage- r Astero Kalogeropoulos says the instal- lations will explore the stories and histo- ries of this land told by the various peo- ples, communities and nations who call this area home. Other themes include: our responsibility to the land and each other, and what it means to celebrate or (not celebrate) the past, present and fu- ture of Waterloo region -- and Canada as a whole. Kalogeropoulos says the selected art- ists will be announced next month. Fol- lowing the selection, an installation map and artist statements will be available on the city's website. The City of Waterloo is also planning a series of small-scale campfire events, taking place on Thursdays in July and August. While the lineups are not yet confirmed, the events will feature live performances by local musicians. Members of the public must pre- register two weeks before each campfire event, with numbers limited to provin- cial gathering guidelines and locations only sent out to registered guests. Drive-in movies are also planned to start up again in June, or once the cur- rent lockdown orders are lifted, Kaloge- ropoulos said. Because of pandemic un- certainties, no specific dates or films are planned yet. However, like last year, pre- registration will be required. "Our programs have been designed to be flexible, so that we can adapt to chang- ing public gathering restrictions," said Kalogeropoulos in a press release. "These type of events are important for people's physical and mental well-being and we hope everyone participates." NO IN-PERSON EVENTS PLANNED FOR CANADA DAY NEWS SCAN THIS CODE for more local news.
