A bike park to be built in RIM Park West this year will be the first of its kind in Waterloo region, accord- ing to a report that went to council Monday asking city council to sign off on the release of funding. BIKE PARK IN RIM PARK WEST, 2021 The bike park, to be lo- cated next to existing ball diamonds, will feature two separate, paved, closed-cir- cuit pump tracks that will accommodate all types of bikes, as well as other non- motorized, wheeled mobil- ity, it says. A pump track is a one- way continuous loop of berms, rollers and banked turns that one can ride with- out pedalling, generating momentum from the track and motions on the bike. One track will be de- signed for beginners and a larger, longer track will be designed for intermediate to advanced skill level rid- ers. The park will also in- clude a shaded viewing ar- ea for spectators. SKATE PARK, JOHN M. HARPER LIBRARY/STORK FAMILY YMCA, 2022 A new skate park at the John M. Harper Library/ Stork Family YMCA is ex- pected to serve the local neighbourhood within the existing community hub and will be visible from the Laurelwood Drive en- trance on the northeast side of the main building, near an existing shade structure. The skate spot will in- clude a small bowl and a large bowl and is expected to be constructed in 2022. The design will be geared toward beginner to inter- mediate level skills (gener- ally ages 7 to 15). In total, the city has close to $2 million set aside to complete both projects that will be tendered sepa- rately. OTHER 'ACTIVE SPORTS PARKS' IN WATERLOO The City of Waterloo in- stalled its first skate park in Waterloo Park in 2011. It accommodates both skate- boarders and BMX bikers of all skill levels. The city's second skate park is currently under construction at the Albert McCormick Community Centre. Pending council approv- al, a skate park in RIM Park East is budgeted and tar- geted for the 2023 construc- tion season. 2 NEW 'ACTION SPORTS PARKS' COMING SOON BILL JACKSON bjackson@torstar.ca NEWS A sketch outlining the area for a new bike park in RIM Park West.
