Waterloo Regional Po- lice are getting nearly $44,000 from the province for its RIDE program to nab impaired drivers. "Road safety is a top priority for the Waterloo Regional Police Service, and our members remain committed to ensuring our roads are kept free from impaired drivers," Police Chief Bryan Larkin said in a news release. "It is concerning to us that people continue to drive impaired, whether that is by alcohol or drugs. RIDE programs remain an important part of road safety as they create a vis- ible reminder to motorists to not drive impaired." The money is part of $2.4 million going to 172 police services across On- tario for roadside checks. "Sadly, impaired driv- ing remains the leading criminal cause of death in Canada," Kitchener-Con- estoga MPP Mike Harris said in the release. "With this funding, Waterloo Re- gional Police Service will be able to conduct the reg- ular roadside spot checks needed to detect impaired drivers and make our roads safer." More than 1,700 people have died and 25,000 have been injured in crashes in- volving an impaired driv- er on Ontario roadways in the last decade. Legaliza- tion of recreational can- nabis in Canada last year makes roadside spot- checks even more essen- tial, says the government. "We are helping to cov- er the costs of RIDE en- forcement activities and educational campaigns to warn the public about the dangers of impaired driv- ing," Harris said. As the holiday season continues, people are re- minded to make plans to get home safely by arrang- ing for a designated driv- er, taxi or ride share, or by taking public transit.
