"Most of our community have done the right thing this year and I am grateful for your efforts," Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor, said in a news release. "For people who have acted recklessly and gath- ered repeatedly with peo- ple outside your house- hold: we care about you and we are worried about your wellbeing. However, know that you've let us all down badly. Your beha- viour risks your health and your education, and it needs to stop, now." Hamdullahpur said last week that the university is working closely with pub- lic health on the "serious" outbreak in the residence community. Public health on Mon- day (March 29) informed the university that 10 peo- ple who live on campus or visited tested positive -- all of the cases linked to off- campus gatherings of stu- dents from both Waterloo universities. The outbreak, as of last week, included a total of 27 cases, including variants of concern. Anyone who lives or works in the residences was advised to get tested for COVID-19. He said UW's measures to control COVID-19 on campus have been effective over the last year, and the outbreak meant everyone needed to double down on measures and keep work- ing together. Further measures have been implemented to con- trol the outbreak, includ- ing removing furniture in shared study spaces, and putting new security mea- sures in place to make sure only those who live in a res- idence can enter. "I know it has been a long, hard year of restric- tions. Now is not the time to let our guard down."
