It's safe to say that summer is very much here. Although, for most of us, this summer may look and feel a bit different. While we may find our- selves gathering and en- tertaining a little less, it doesn't mean that we can't enjoy the nice weather and the delicious treats that come with it! If you're looking for some easy ways to make some of your favourite summer treats a little bit healthier, I've got three simple ideas for you: 1. Healthy Hydration -- If your go-to beverage when it's hot out is a sug- ar-sweetened beverage like pop, sports drinks or juice, try infused water to give you the flavour you crave without all the add- ed sugar! To make infused water, simply grab your favou- rite pitcher and fill it with water and ice, next add your favourite fruit -- cit- rus and berries work well. Lastly, add some fresh herbs such as mint or rosemary. Pop the pitcher in the fridge for two to four hours to chill and enjoy. Some of my favourite flavour combinations in- clude strawberry, basil, and lemon or mint, lime, and pineapple. Anything goes, so get creative! 2. BBQ Dessert -- Looking for a fresh spin on summer desserts? Get creative by grilling fruit such as fresh peaches, pears, or pineapple. Grilling caramelizes the fruit to bring out the natural sugars for a sweet and satisfying dessert. Make sure your grill is clean before you get start- ed. Large chunks of fruit are easiest to grill but skewers can also be used for smaller fruit. Serve grilled fruit on its own, or sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with some ice cream. Grilled fruit can also add a sweet and refreshing burst of flavour to your salads or salsas. 3. Frozen Treats -- Have you been hearing that all-too-familiar ice cream truck tune in your neighbourhood lately? Ice cream has always been one of those must-have summer treats to help you cool down on a hot day. While ice cream can be a welcomed treat, if you're looking for something less indulgent, try swap- ping it out for a delicious and lighter smoothie pop! Just blend plain or va- nilla yogurt with your fa- vourite fresh or frozen fruit (add water if neces- sary) and pour the mix- ture into Popsicle moulds or paper cups with a pop- sicle stick. Pop them into your freezer until frozen. Smoothie pops can also be a fun breakfast option for kids! Heidi is a registered dietitian with Zehrs.
