The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate ac- tion. While actions like community clean up events won't be taking place this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the prohibition of gatherings, it's still possible to celebrate Earth Day beyond April 22. Action on climate change has been distin- guished as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this year. In- dividuals are being encouraged to organize environmentally friendly activities at home by Earth Day Canada. During the month of April, the organization is suggesting a di er- ent green practice each day through its Face- book and Instagram accounts to promote the integration of these habits into daily life. The following are some examples of envi- ronmental actions to do at home as present- ed by Earth Day Canada #EARTHDAYATHOME. • Eat organic: To preserve the richness of the soil, improve air quality and protect biodiversity and one's own health. • Eat local: To eat fresher products, contrib- ute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to transport, and make a particularly important gesture of solidar- ity in this period of health crisis. • Reduce food waste: In Canada, 58 per cent of food is thrown away along the food chain. Use up leftovers to make infusions, soups and tasty stews to freeze. • Eat vegetarian: Livestock is responsible for 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, 63 per cent of deforestation in the Amazon, overconsumption of water and depletion of soil. • Make your own household products: Con- ventional household cleaning products contain chemical components dangerous to health and the environment. • Compost, consign, recycle: Your winning trio to reduce your production of waste, after a reduction at source of course. • Towards zero waste: Reduce your con- sumption of single-use plastic cups, straws, bags, reusable containers. At pres- ent their use can be more di cult but when the situation returns to normal, they will be precious assets in your zero waste approach. • Favour the purchase of second-hand: Second-hand stores, garage sales ... there are plenty of opportunities to buy gen- tly used items. You can also organize ex- changes between colleagues or friends. • Recycle Batteries: The best way to prevent batteries from invading our land lls is to make sure they never go their way. • Make a vegetable garden (in town or in the countryside): Whether you are in the countryside with a large garden or in town with a balcony, it's time to start growing vegetables and herbs, without neglecting owers for our pollinator friends.
