The uptown Waterloo landmark received not on- ly a complete facelift, but an entire rework of its components as part of the festival's 50th Anniversa- ry Celebrations in 2018. The newly renovated structure features an 18- bell Carillon interior, once again bringing mu- sic and cheer, welcoming visitors to the city. Originally constructed and dedicated in 1984, the original time teller fea- tured a centerpiece con- sisting of various anthro- pomorphic instruments, a steam paddle wheel and beer steins that swayed and moved to traditional polka music. The instruments used to operate on the hour, how- ever the piece has been si- lent for a number of years. Now it has been brought back to its former glory, thanks to the efforts of many partners including Melloul Blamey Construc- tion, who under Bernie Melloul's leadership, was instrumental in construct- ing the original time teller. President of Kitchener- Waterloo Oktoberfest, Tim Beckett, said the symbol of our community's rich Ger- man Heritage, and will fur- ther enhance "Canada's Greatest Bavarian Festi- val." The project was sup- ported by private donors, the City of Waterloo and the German-Canadian Re- membrance Society. Pro- ceeds from the 2018 Porsche Boxster Dream Car Lottery supported by Pfaff Porsche, Porsche of London and the Shriners of Canada, were also donated towards paying for the ren- ovation. "We thank the City of Waterloo and the many contributors for their fi- nancial and in-kind sup- port allowing K-W Okto- berfest Inc. to bring this landmark back to life," said Beckett. "I am delighted that the bells of Kitchener-Water- loo Oktoberfest, Canada's greatest Bavarian festival, are once again ringing through uptown Waterloo," said Mayor Dave Jaworsky. "Oktoberfest is a celebra- tion like no other, and we look forward to this year's festivities."
