Leanne Holland Brown, 43, died April 24 when a car went out of control on Central Street in front of MacGregor Se- nior Public School in Wa- terloo. Brown, dean of stu- dents at Wilfrid Laurier University, was out for an afternoon walk with Jen- nifer Gillespie. She was taking a break and was about to return for a scheduled meeting. The car mounted the curb, struck Brown and also hit a hydro pole. Gil- lespie survived but prose- cutors allege she was traumatized. The driver, Ronald Rees, 57, now faces charg- es of dangerous and im- paired driving causing bodily harm to Gillespie. "Our view is that there is psychological harm," prosecutor Michael Mi- chaud said last Thursday. Rees is charged also with dangerous and im- paired driving causing Brown's death. Although released from custody with condi- tions in May, Rees was in custody last week when he appeared briefly in a Kitchener courtroom. From the prisoner's box, he looked straight ahead to hear the dates confirmed for a prelimi- nary hearing into the charges against him. The hearing begins Dec. 3. It is subject to a publication ban that pre- vents the reporting of any evidence or information presented in court. After the collision, Brown was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospi- tal where she later died. She was the Baden moth- er of two young boys. Rees is being defended by Cambridge lawyer Bernard Cummins.
