Elegant and mesmeriz- ing, a new interactive mu- ral titled "Déployez vos ailes" hangs on the front fa- çade of the K-W Bilingual School. At a majestic eight feet in height and width, an in- tricately painted pair of wings celebrate the beauty of balance and simplicity. Created by Jada Piro De- Fehr, a Grade 11 student at St. Michael Catholic Sec- ondary School in Stratford, her artist statement reads: "My mission in creating this mural is to inspire a moment of happiness and consciousness in all who participate. I invite you to take a moment, snap a pho- to, and fly." Standing central in front of DeFehr's piece for a photo inspired me to reflect on how public art not only adds meaning to our every- day lives, but creates one- of-a-kind gathering spaces. "Art has always been an interest of mine; growing up with my mom being an art teacher has always in- spired me to create from a young age," said Jada, daughter of Kristin DeFehr who teaches art and En- glish at K-W Bilingual, where I am a parent. Jada told me that the white and blue wings of the mural, created with a mix- ture of paint and Sharpies, were an expression of cre- ative freedom encouraged in the curriculum of her Grade 12 interdisciplinary studies course. She said the intention behind the artwork is to in- spire viewers to temporari- ly put aside the distrac- tions of technology and so- cial media to embrace a sense of immediate inter- action with beauty. I told Jada how I have al- ready seen countless stu- dents, parents and staff ea- ger to have their picture taken in front of her mural. "I have received such in- credible support from friends, family and peers as well," she replied. "When I presented the mural for the first time at the Stratford Winterfest, we recorded over 400 people taking pho- tos in front of my mural, which was so unexpected." Jada expressed how proud she is to contribute a public art piece to Waterloo Region's already vibrant arts and culture scene. "I am beyond grateful and honoured to have my art displayed at such an in- credible school in such a fantastic city," she said, the pride evident in her voice. As someone who has cre- ated public artworks my- self, I can relate to that feel- ing. And as someone who feels a deeper connection to our community through the many pieces of public art around the region, I'm delighted to know that tal- ented young artists like Ja- da are contributing posi- tively to our ever-changing cultural landscape.
