SLATE LEDGESTONE In 2013 we dove into our first climate action journey as a community, releasing the current climate action plan with a six per cent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target to be achieved by 2020. We are well on our way to achieving this goal (in 2015 we had achieved a 5.2 per cent reduction), and now need to focus our attention to the future. The Region of Waterloo, cities of Cambridge, Kitche- ner, and Waterloo, and townships of Wilmot, Wellesley, Woolwich, and North Dumfries have unan- imously approved an 80 per cent greenhouse gas emis- sions reduction target to be achieved by 2050. To see this through, we will need to come together and create transformational change within our community over the next 30 years. This is an opportunity to embrace the wealth of knowledge, inno- vation, and community spirit and support we have available to us in this re- gion, and use it to create a better future for all. To harness that commu- nity spirit, every year dur- ing the summer and fall, a team of dedicated Clima- teActionWR volunteers - dubbed our "Street Team" - attend events and activities throughout the region to engage with community members and collect their insights into our GHG re- duction targets. Last year, our Street Team attended nearly 20 events all over Waterloo Region. Of the 350+ community members we engaged with, the majority identified home energy usage and waste as the areas that most needed change. What's in- teresting is that two areas where our local emissions are even higher were not commonly identified: Transportation and work- places. Our most recent GHG re-inventory (in 2015), shows that our three high- est GHG emitting areas are transportation (making up 49 per cent of our total emis- sions), workplaces (with 27 per cent) and homes (18 per cent), with waste responsi- ble for only one per cent. This means we, as the pub- lic, are not seeing the need for reductions in some of the areas that require the most significant lifestyle and habit changes. This year, our Street Team has a key role to play in collecting critical infor- mation to be used in the de- velopment of the long-term climate action strategy, working toward the 80 per cent GHG reduction by 2050. It's time for us to hit the streets again to: 1) Inform the public of our highest GHG emitting sectors; 2) Gather insight into what should be in place in Waterloo Region to make it possible to reduce our emis- sions in transportation, at work and at home. We need to hear the voices of our en- tire community in order to achieve this ambitious but necessary goal, and create the healthy and vibrant fu- ture we know is possible. Keep an eye out for our Street Teams at local events and share your insight with us! Follow our 80 by 50 prog- ress on our website, Face- book, and Twitter accounts (@ClimateActionWR).
