In total, paramedics received 40 calls for ser- vice and transported 34 to hospital during the four- daylong Ever After music festival at Bingemans in Kitchener. "The majority of those calls were related to alco- hol and substance mis- use," said Nic Smith of Re- gion of Waterloo Para- medic Services in an email. The numbers are up slightly from 2018, when paramedics transported 32 patients to hospital, while responding to 37 calls for service. While calls for service to paramedics were up, so were noise complaints to the City of Kitchener's by- law department. The electronic music festival drew a total of 36 noise complaints from surrounding residents, up from only six in 2018. In 2017, there was a re- cord number of noise complaints related to the three-day event, at 130. Despite the increase in the number of noise com- plaints, the audio levels never exceeded the maxi- mum of 55 decibels. According to Gloria MacNeil, director of by- law enforcement at the City of Kitchener, 18 of the 36 complaints came on Thursday while the pro- duction company was pushing the limits to ad- just for a "worst case sce- nario." Five extra complaints came after sound checks and were related to a smaller stage that operat- ed from 6 to 11 p.m. On Friday night, there were three complaints, on Saturday night, there were six complaints and on Sun- day evening, there were four. In all cases, sound test- ing was conducted from the complainant's address. The booming bass has been a bone of contention for the surrounding neighbourhoods since the annual event started in 2016.
