"I really wanted to provide a level of support for individuals if they're experi- encing a variety of symptoms," Taylor told the Independent. "And having more access to regular counselling is difficult because many of the agencies that are able to pro- vide counselling support are all very excel- lent (but), unfortunately, have pretty long waiting lists." Taylor is a registered social worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She works with people of all ages, families and is looking to start group therapy sessions in the summer. Taylor is interested in start- ing garden therapy as well. In her sessions, Taylor, who has a Mas- ters in social work from Laurier, aims to create a relaxing, comfortable and "non- medicalized" environment. Bonnie Taylor looks to create a relax- ing, 'non-medicalized' environment at her private practice. "It is very difficult to make the first call for counselling support," she said. "And talking to a stranger for the first time about something you might not have ever talked to anyone about before, it can be a scary experience." Over the past 20 years, Taylor, who lives on a farm with her husband, has worked in the social services and education sectors, including roles at the University of Water- loo and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. "I have such a passion for helping peo- ple create mental wellness," Taylor said." Many people come forward for treatment or I've seen over the years in different ca- pacities, (and it) doesn't necessarily mean they've been diagnosed with a mental is- sue; they're just not feeling mentally well. "I think I'm pretty approachable, from what I've heard from people; everybody has told me I'm very sensitive. I'm a very calm person and kind of make (people) feel at ease when they come in. I don't rush peo- ple through the process, and I think people appreciate that as well." Taylor particularly feels that her coun- selling can be helpful for people who don't want to talk to others for a fear of being judged. "I hope that I will be able to improve the mental health of the individuals who meet with me," Taylor said. "Mental wellness is such a critical part of our health, and I tru- ly enjoy working with individuals to devel- op ways to maintain a mentally healthy life, especially when they are dealing with stress, feeling depressed, anxious, having relationship issues, having life changes, isolation or have disabilities/chronic ill- nesses. Building resilience is an important skill to manage life's challenges." For more information on Taylor and the service she provides, visit the official web- site at bonnietaylorcounselling.com.
