A project estimated to cost between $3.5 million and $4 million to extend col- lection pipes and gas wells at the region's landfill on Erb Street West will receive a boost of up to $1.5 million from the feder- al government. The 1.3-kilometre gas header to go along the west side of the landfill will be designed this year and installed next year, according to Jon Arsenault, the Re- gion of Waterloo's director of waste man- agement. The project basically duplicates the east collection pipe on the west side of the landfill, he said, part of continued up- grades and maintenance efforts on-site. Gas is collected using an extraction system that consists of trenches and gas wells installed within the landfill. Turning it into power has been achieved under a partnership with Tor- mont Power since 1999, Arsenault ex- plained The gas is sent to Tormont's plant on- site, which generates the electricity us- ing Caterpillar engines, not unlike a combustion engine in a vehicle. More than 6,000 kW goes back on the grid, which is enough to power upward of 4,000 homes. House Leader and Waterloo MP Bar- dish Chagger touted the investment from the federal government's Low Carbon Economy Fund as one that will prevent greenhouse gases like methane from be- ing released into the air. Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases contributing to cli- mate change. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless. "Of course, our biggest challenge out there with growth and encroachment is odour," Arsenault noted "Some gas collection infrastructure is temporary and interim pipes are more susceptible to weather and freezing," he explained, "so our efficiency and effec- tiveness isn't as good at those times when there are temperature inversions at night or in the morning, which can cre- ate issues of odour." With collection system upgrades and over time, as the site is capped, odour is- sues will be greatly reduced, Arsenault said.
