A Grade 12 student at Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School is taking a stance against alleged bullying, racism, and a lack of punishment for the beha- viour at the high school. Bryan Peralta, 17, ac- cused a female student of calling him a racial slur last year, as well as using it during a verbal confronta- tion in class during the last week of February. Peralta also alleges the student often posts racial- ly insensitive posts on so- cial media platforms, such as Instagram and Snap- chat. He says that she doesn't particularly care who sees it. As a result, Peralta met with Waterloo-Oxford vice- principal Peter Kalbfleisch twice to air his concerns. Peralta recorded his second meeting with Kalb- fleisch, but wasn't happy with his reaction, posting the audio recording to In- stagram, a post which re- ceived more than 3,800 likes and several com- ments, generally in sup- port of him. The recording has the unconfirmed voice of Kalb- fleisch. The Instagram post appears to feature bits and pieces of the conversation. Kalbfleisch wasn't aware that the conversation was being recorded. In the full recording, which was provided to the Independent, Kalbfleisch noted that he believes Peralta is a "great kid" and he is simply trying to de- escalate the situation. Also in the recording, Kalbfleisch said he be- lieves that Peralta and the accused are at fault, saying that Peralta was provoking the accused. The conversation that was posted on Instagram was about one minute, 30 seconds in length, while the full conversation was over 30 minutes. In the Instagram post, Peralta included an audio comment about the vice- principal letting the "situ- ation go," which was in ref- erence to a back and forth conversation Peralta was having with an individual who was messaging and threatening him in re- gards to the stance he was NEWS Bryan Peralta is taking a stance against bullying and racism as well as the alleged conduct of the vice principal at Waterloo Oxford in Baden.
