For Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky, news of a re- gional government review didn't come as a surprise last week. "I think this provincial government has said that we're going to look at ways of making governments bet- ter," said Jaworsky in an in- terview, shortly after the Doug Ford provincial gov- ernment announced that it will be undertaking a re- view of regional municipal- ities within the province, in- cluding Waterloo Region. Jaworsky said he's pleased with the fact former regional chair Ken Seiling is one of two advisers for the review, meaning that it should be fair and balanced. "He makes sure the best ideas come forward and ev- eryone has a voice," said Ja- worsky. With confidence in the way the regional govern- ment operates with all seven municipalities, Jaworsky, who is in his second term as mayor of Waterloo, said there shouldn't be reason to change much. "If it's not broke, don't fix it," he said. Seiling has stated on re- cord that there are no pa- rameters set around the re- view that the province says will examine Ontario's eight regional municipalities (Halton, York, Durham, Wa- terloo, Niagara, Peel, Mus- koka District and Oxford County), the County of Sim- coe, and their lower-tier mu- nicipalities - 82 in all. "Our government com- mitted to improving the way regional government works and we will be looking at ways to make better use of taxpayers' dollars and make it easier for residents and businesses to access impor- tant municipal services," said Steve Clark, minister of municipal affairs and hous- ing, in a press release. Joining Seiling is Mi- chael Fenn, a former Onta- rio deputy minister under three premiers, and a mu- nicipal chief administrator in Hamilton and Burling- ton. Fenn is the founding CEO of the regional trans- portation authority Metro- linx, as well as the regional health authority Mississau- ga Halton LHIN. He re- searches and writes exten- sively on infrastructure and public policy. According to a media re- lease, the advisers will look for: • Opportunities to make it easier for residents and businesses to access munic- ipal services; • Processes to deliver effi- cient and effective local ser- vices that respects taxpay- ers' money; • Methods to make mu- nicipalities open for busi- ness; and, • Possibilities to cut red tape and duplication and save costs. Local residents and busi- nesses will be consulted in spring 2019. Regional chair Karen Redman said there are still a lot of unknowns.
