There are hundreds of organizations, programs and services in our community that engage volunteers. How do you choose what is right for you when there is so much need and there are so many options? Here are some questions and thoughts to consider as you begin your exploration. Is there a cause or organization that you feel strongly about and would like support? Many people know in advance that they are passionate about ending poverty or visiting with older adults. You can search directly with an organization that you feel passionate about or look at similar organizations that may have a position that you find really attractive. Is there a location that will best suit you? If it will be challenging to get to the location where you will be volunteering, it is not likely the best opportunity for you. Know how much time you have to share. Don't overextend yourself as you accept a volunteer role. No matter how well intentioned, if you don't have the time or the location is inconvenient, you will likely leave the role early and this can lead to a bad experience for you that will get in the way of future volunteering. Understand your motivation; think about what you want to achieve through your volunteering. You might want to gain skills for your resume or share skills that you have but don't get to use in your work life. Many people looking for employment build demonstrable skills for their resume through volunteer work. Positions posted on the Volunteer Action Centre website indicate the skills you may have to provide or skills you may want to learn. If you haven't volunteered before, don't know what to expect, or are concerned about making a long-term commitment, there are many ways that you can participate for a short period and find out what this experience can offer. Try volunteering for a festival or special event. These can require as little as four hours of your time and can introduce you to a variety of ways support community activities. Alternatively, try a position that may require a few hours a week for three of four months to get familiar with the programs and services provided by a community organization. No matter how you get involved, Volunteers make a difference in Waterloo Region every day. Please consider getting involved today. To explore the many and varied types of opportunities available visit the Volunteer Action Centre website at volunteerwr.ca or call 519-742-8610. If you are a youth looking to get started with community engagement hours or just give volunteering a try, visit volunteerwr.ca/youth for some tips and ideas.
