FT. Of 905-779-0422For More Info My name is Leia Lei. My mission is to be the first mi- nority woman elected to be a councillor in the history of Waterloo. I believe I have the credentials, the ability and the desire to be an ef- fective voice for my Ward 1 neighbours. I immigrated to Canada 18 years ago. I chose to raise my family in Waterloo be- cause I love Waterloo. My son attends the public school in Ward 1. I am a strong supporter of youth and senior activities. I also volunteer at WCCA, Rise For Climate, Mind Plus and ROLCC. I have been very proactive in our neigh- bourhood as well. I am deeply committed to the quality of life in our lovely neighbourhood and city. With a master's degree in accounting from Rider University, I have a deep understanding of the fi- nancial challenges Water- loo faces. I am profession- ally trained to understand the complexity of operat- ing this large corporation under the pressure of keep- ing taxes low. My own local business, with an interna- tional client base, has taught me to effectively manage people and run a successful independent en- terprise. These skills will prove valuable in my role as Ward 1 councillor. Waterloo is blessed to be one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Canada with our neighbours find- ing their way to our safe and prosperous city from every corner of the globe. This is especially true in Ward 1. I believe I am an ex- ample of the positive bene- fits that minorities have had in shaping our commu- nity. Waterloo is ready to have a minority woman on council, especially one who has the qualifications, de- termination and commit- ment. I will be an effective voice for Ward 1. But I need your help to achieve this important milestone. On Oct. 22, please vote for me, Leia Lei. I will work hard every day to earn your sup- port. LEIA LEI Leia Lei MUNICIPAL ELECTION Respectfully ... (and hav- ing served with as Ward 1's councillor for the past four years) Bob Mavin has cho- sen not to seek re-election in this fall's municipal elec- tion. As a result, Ward 1 will have a new councillor in the inaugural Dec. 3 council meeting. Five can- didates have stepped for- ward seeking to represent Ward 1. Given that all can- didates are seeking office for the first time, voters will need to determine which individual, among the five, will best represent the community on a set cri- teria other than as experi- enced councillors. Among the many pre- requisites required to be an effective councillor, there are four that stand out: community/association participation, attendance at city council, reliable availability and long-term residency. My membership and participation with the Westvale Community As- sociation, K/W Optimist Club, K/W Chamber of Commerce and regional landfill committee allow for the most effective of op- portunities to connect, lis- ten and learn from other active and like minded citi- zens when addressing local issues. Secondly, I have attend- ed a number of council meetings over many years. I have watched a number of professional and citizen delegations, downloaded agenda items to better un- derstand processes of city government, and met councillors and city staff. In this election year, it is encouraging to see a num- ber of new attendees doing the same! Third, anyone seeking election will be required to accept their role as full- time and if need be, adjust their work and family time accordingly. As such, my work commitments allow for complete flexibility and availability. Finally, I believe long- term residency in one's ward cannot be underesti- mated. Long-term residen- cy foments a connection with the neighbourhood and enables candidates to know their ward and its concerns. It is for these reasons that I believe citizens of Ward 1 should vote for Rob- ert Parent on Oct. 22. Thank you. ROB PARENT Rob Parent Why should the public vote for you? My family and I have proudly called Ward 1 home for over 25 years. It is a great place to live and raise a family. I val- ue and bring a commit- ment to this community in everything I do. As we look toward the 2020s, I want to be part of the future of Waterloo by representing your voice, the voice of Ward 1 around the decision- making table. I intend to use my pro- fessional and volunteer experiences to develop the best ways to creative- ly handle the issues and opportunities facing Ward 1 and our city. I will speak strongly. With your input, I will focus on the issues that matter: • Smart growth: I will advocate for growth of our city that considers the needs of all resi- dents, reflects the uniqueness of our neigh- bourhoods, integrates our transportation sys- tems, encourages busi- ness growth and contin- ues to foster the spirit of community. • Fiscal responsibili- ty: I will work hard to en- sure that money being spent at city hall reflects your needs and priori- ties and that every dollar is used wisely. • Health and well-be- ing: I will work with community leaders and government officials to further co-ordinate health services that are timely, accessible, sup- port individuals and families, and address the unique needs of older adults and people with disabilities. Tied to smart growth is the im- portance of promoting green spaces, parks and recreational facilities as well as arts and cultural activities. • Community connec- tions: I plan to use the positive example of Ward 1's neighbourhood and homeowners' associ- ations to support the roll-out of the City of Wa- terloo's new neighbour- hood strategy. An impor- tant step to the success- ful roll-out of this initia- tive is communication. I will ensure that there is two-way communication between the city and res- idents. All this can be done because together, we will make the best deci- sions for Ward 1 and for our larger community. On Oct. 22, I'm asking for your support and vote. Thank you.
