WIN! grandprizeof Agenerous donation to the new Hospice of Waterloo Re- gion building, along with its ceremonial groundbreaking, was cause for celebration on Friday afternoon in Waterloo. The residence wing in the Gies Family Centre, a state-of- the-art hospice residence and palliative care centre, will be named the Cook Family Resi- dence, after Ian and Bettina Cook donated $1 million to the cause. The new building will be located across from RIM Park near the baseball dia- monds. "I think there's a tremen- dous need for this type of ser- vice," said Cook. "There are services that are currently provided at Lissard, and Innis- free House in Kitchener, but there's a big gap in the City of Waterloo, and I think we need to be able to provide that con- tinuum of care, and I think that's what motivated us to be part of this project." A total of $9.1 million has been raised from individuals, corporations, and foundations throughout the Region in a capital campaign throughout the last year conducted by Hospice of Waterloo Region. More phases will continue in- to the fall with an eventual minimum goal of $10 million. "We are overwhelmed by the support of our community in bringing in to reality this vi- sion for excellent end of life care in Waterloo Region," said capital campaign chair Merv Redman in a press release. "This truly is a compassionate community that has taken up the challenge of caring for family, friends, and neigh- bours in their most significant time of need." Several local politicians and dignitaries were on hand for the event including MP Bardish Chagger, MPPs Cath- erine Fife and Mike Harris Jr., Waterloo Mayor Dave Jawor- sky, and Kitchener Mayor Ber- ry Vrbanovic. The Region of Waterloo al- so donated $250,000 to the new building while the City of Wa- terloo donated $300,000 while the provincial government provided substantial funding. "I am happy to to say that last night we did get the full funding commitment of $2 mil- lion to be able to keep things moving along here and more importantly the green light to actually start the build, and start the digging and get the survey done," said Harris Jr. "This has been a great showing of what a public and private partnership can do." The Gies Family Centre- Hospice of Waterloo Region is scheduled to open in the fall of 2019. Politicians, dignitaries, and those who provided dona- tions took a shot at digging for the groundbreaking ceremo- ny, signifying a major step in the process.
