Bonoguore, who recently announced her candidacy for Ward 7 in the upcoming mu- nicipal election, took the op- portunity to get the know the community intimately when she moved to Waterloo in 2010. "It was the first time I could live in the community and could actually be involved in it," said Bonoguore, a former journalist, who is originally from Australia and wanted more of a role than just inter- ested observer. Now, officially running as acandidate for Ward 7 - the up- town ward - Bonoguore is div- ing head first into community issues that shape the core. And this isn't the first she's de- cided to get involved. Shortly after moving to Waterloo from Toronto, Bono- guore founded the Grand Porch Party, the annual street party that features a series of musical acts who perform on residents' porches in her up- town west neighbourhood. She was also an organizer of the Open Streets Waterloo ef- fort that closed off King Street to car traffic four times a year to promote culture and other activities. Bonoguore, who currently works at the Perimeter Insti- tute, said she wants to keep the city heading in the right direc- tion and empower the com- munity to be more involved in the decision-making process. "I really like local politics. It's what impacts your life the most," she said. "It has a very strong impact on the shape and vision of the city." Bonoguore said she also wants to make sure that if council's decision goes against what residents are requesting, they understand why those decisions were made. Bonoguore said the city has a lot of positive things hap- pening, but needs to continue to stay ahead of the curve. "I feel like the city has good momentum right now," said Bonoguore. "We just need to continue to make smart deci- sions." So far, the only other candi- date who has registered in Ward 7 is Devon McKenzie, the owner of a number of night clubs in uptown Waterloo, who has also thrown his hat into the ring. Incumbent Coun.
