The City of Waterloo has moved forward with a plan that could see as many as three new skate parks installed in different areas of the city. City council approved $305,725 in funding for the design and consultation process to add "action sports venues" to the John M. Harper Library, the Stork Family YMCA, Al- bert McCormick Commu- nity Centre as well as RIM Park. The action sports ven- ues will likely be either skateboarding or dirt BMX or mountain bike tracks. When staff looked for specific sites to pursue fur- ther, they looked for cer- tain criteria. The criteria included unstructured locations that were visible with street frontage, clustered with other amenities, and close to concentrations of youth. The new venues would also need to be designed for beginner to intermedi- ates, and offer new chal- lenges and encourage mul- ti-level skill development. City staff will now seek a consultant team that has experience in planning and design of these types of facilities. "We want to plan them together and have consis- tency," said Karen Ander- son, a landscape architect with the city. "The end of this process will have con- struction-ready draw- ings." The next time this comes back to council, staff, through the consul- tant, will have a good idea of where exactly the skate parks will go and what is possible on the land. If and when that returns to coun- cillors, staff and the con- sultant will then complete the build-ready design. The city has seen a ma- jor uptick in usage of the uptown skate park, espe- cially when it comes to day camps. Coun. Brian Bourke, who lives in uptown near the Waterloo Park skate park, asked staff if there is a possibility to create a more inclusive environ- ment that would attract more females. "That is absolutely something we're looking to do," said Anderson.
