Last year according to my records, I had an early nine-hole round in late March at the now-gone Wa- terloo Golf Academy. This year it was the second of May for nine at the Conesto- ga Golf Club for the opening week of the continuing-to- grow Waterloo Seniors 55 coed league. And anybody who thinks I have an ego about my golf skills, consider this. One of the new regulars on our Wednesday seniors tour, 94-year-old Dr. Fred, only outdrives me about 75 per cent of the time. Hey, it could be worse and maybe it will be as the season contin- ues. I've only toured Conesto- ga and Foxwood so far but the word around the golf business is that the area courses are up and running and in the process of clear- ing fallen trees and branch- es after that freak hurrica- nelike storm a little while back. As I've pointed out in the past, Waterloo Region and nearby areas are one of this province's best loca- tions for golf venues rang- ing from private to public. Earlier this year I men- tioned the fact that Seaforth Golf Course would be host- ing an event called the Sea- forth Country Classic wom- en's professional golf tour- nament from Thursday, Aug. 2 to Saturday, Aug. 4. Although the name says women's, the event will fea- ture 36 female pros, 36 male pros and elite amateurs with handicaps of two or less. The Seaforth Club, oper- ated by the outstanding Doig family, will have a pro- am on Aug. 2 and then two rounds of no-cut action Aug. 3 and 4. First place for a full field will be $7,500 for the pros and a gift voucher for the low amateurs. Entry fees are $500 plus tax for the pros and $250 plus tax for the amateurs. Other features include guaranteed host housing, unlimited use of the prac- tice range, free practice rounds after July 1 and comp food vouchers during the tourney. With a dwindling num- ber of women's events now, there's a good chance this could fill up in a hurry since the Doigs are targeting Michigan and upstate New York in addition to Ontario. I've known the Doigs for decades and if they fill the field it will be a top-notch event. Over the years previ- ous tourneys have raised over $100,000 for medical charities in the Seaforth ar- ea.
