There is no doubt in my mind that the giant weath- erman in the sky is not a fan of golf. Why else would he tease us with a couple of days of double-digit temperatures last month? Remember that Monday and Tuesday at the end of February when it was short-sleeve balmy? Well they do at the al- ways open Grand Valley golf course where they had a plenty of customers. And when I say always open, that is the case if there is no snow on the ground since it's hard to find your golf ball if it's lying in the white stuff. And I also heard that one of my favourite area courses - Innerkip High- lands - had nine holes open for two days. I don't know if any other tracks in the re- gion were open but you can see how this info is just teasing those of us who would love to get an early start to the 2018 season. I may not be playing yet but there is no shortage of golf news that has me inter- ested from the pros to the amateurs on both sides of the border. Let's do a quick look back. The U.S PGA and boob tube networks in Ditzyland - my new description of the country now being run by the lying, blowhard Trump - are welcoming the return of golf's living legend El- drick Woods. His comeback is inspiring bigger crowds and a boost in the TV rat- ings. Two weeks ago I enjoyed the playoff victory of Phil Mickelson. Phil has been a fave of mine for years, not only because of his no-fear style of play but also be- cause of his wonderful in- teraction with the fans, something Eldrick has tried only in the last few seasons. But then last weekend it was an even bigger treat be- cause I watched as Corey Conners - a PGA Tour rook- ie at age 26 - stunned a lot of big name pros by leading the Valspar tournament in Palm Harbor, Fla., for three straight rounds. Although nobody on TV had much of an idea who this Canadian was, that wouldn't be the case for most golf fans in Kitwat- ville and nearby areas be- cause Corey is a native of Listowel, and still lists the nice 27-hole Listowel Golf Club as his home base. I was all fired up for Sun- day's closing when he went into the final round with a one-shot lead over a bunch of big names including that Tiger guy. I was hoping he could re- peat what another Canadi- an, B.C.'s Adam Hadwin, did one year earlier when he won the same event. However I didn't think he could face that kind of final day pressure, and sadly I was correct. He struggled for most of the round and wound up shooting six over par 77 in the final 18 to tie for 16th. I'm guessing he still cashed a nice check and thousands of us in the area will be rooting for him to join the winners list in the near future. And my new cheer for him. CCCC. That's short for Canadian Corey Conners Can. Careful Far- well, that's copyright. Senior league Next month - Thursday April 12 to be exact - will be registration day for the continuing to grow Water- loo55 coed senior golf league. Sign-ups will be at the Granite Club (next to University Stadium) run- ning from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additional info on all the league has to offer can be found at the Waterloose- niorgolf website. In co-operation with GolfNorth, 18 and nine-hole rounds can be arranged at various sites in the Golf- North operation, each Wednesday, starting May 2, and running for more than 20 weeks. I've been in the league for more than a decade and it's been fun getting to know new friends and touching base with old ones. Womens Tourney at Seaforth There will be a women's pro-amateur tourney at the Doig-family operated Sea- forth Golf Club on Aug 2- 3-4. I will have more details on this event in a later col- umn. - Bill (Skip) Johns retired from full-time sportswrit- ing in 2002 but still tries to keep his head in the game.
