Thursday, November 9, 2017 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • 5Serving your community since 1856 By Joy Struthers Chronicle Staff Madison Umbach, who lives with juvenile rheumatoid arthri- tis, got some exciting news last week after being called up in front of the Friday assembly at Westvale Public School. She didn't suspect her wish to go to Aulani, a Disney resort in Hawaii, was about to be granted, even though the volun- teers from Make-A-Wish were there that day and had brought Maddie the special custom- made mermaid dress she had designed herself. They told her they were just filming a docu- mentary. For Caroline Wilcox and Maureen Maus, Make-A-Wish granters for South Western Ontario, this was their first big reveal. "It's very exciting for us. It's special when we know some- body like Maddie who's had so many significant health chal- lenges through her short eight years. To be able to do some- thing like this for her is just indescribable," said Wilcox. The tickets have already been booked and the trip was planned for a week from the reveal date. It doesn't usually work out like this according to the volunteers, but Wilcox said they were happy it did. "She won't have long to wait," she said. Maddie chose the Disney resort because of her love for everything Disney, and her pas- sion for the sea and the crea- tures in it. "She loves mermaids and is looking forward to swimming," said Amanda Umbach, her mother. She said when they were talking about places she would like to visit Maddie brought up visiting significant landmarks like the Great Wall of China, and even the Eiffel Tower. "She's so old-souled. She picks all these mature things," said Amanda. Maddie's father, Shaq, called her unbelievably grown up. "I can't understand her maturity level. When I was that age I would never be that calm and sweet, hopeful and optimis- tic," he said. Shaq said the past week they have seen Maddie more down than they have seen her before. Her pain has been getting worse because the medication that had helped Maddie so much before isn't working anymore. "This is just what she needs to bring her back up," he said. It has been a long journey for Maddie, who deals with a great amount of pain in her joints and tires easily. She also has asthma and uses puffers regularly on top of other medications for her arthritis. She has to be very care- ful to not get sick. "She's super susceptible. Her immune system is just gone. That's not a side effect of the arthritis, but a side effect of the treatment," said Shaq. He said there is a big risk to her health when they travel, so they will be taking extra precau- tions. "She's had more hospitaliza- tions than I can count for pneu- monia and things like that," said Shaq. She manages her pain with rest, heat and cold packs and various therapies. "As a parent, it's so hard to see your kid in pain and you feel you can't do anything for them," said Shaq. Maddie and her younger sister Mackenzie, seven, and brother Shiloh, three, are excit- ed to go on this trip and their parents are quite thankful. They made sure to stress their grati- tude to the Make-A-Wish Foun- dation for everything they have done. Local girl granted her wish
