To date, there have been three cases of Influenza A reported locally, with sporadic cases reported elsewhere in the province. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, chills, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and muscle or joint aches. People who experi- ence them are advised to stay home until the symptoms begin to lessen, cover coughs, fre- quently wash hands and stay away from hospitals or retire- ment/long-term care homes. People are encouraged to cough into their sleeve or elbow, instead of their hands to prevent passing the infection. But the best bet to beat the bug is to get a flu shot. Influ- enza immunization offers the best protection for persons over the age of six months and is available free of charge to any- one that lives, works or attends school in Ontario. Vaccination for the general population has already begun through Ontario's Universal Influenza Immunization Pro- gram. Flu vaccine is available through pharmacies, primary health care providers and walk-in clinics, as well as pub- lic health's family flu clinics for families with children five years old and under.
