Th e game is far from dead but seniors -- from a mix of age groups -- are the newest newcomers to the tees and greens and it is a good thing, speaking as one of them. Part of the reason the older group is busy is the fact that many golf clubs are owned and/or operated by fam- ily groups who like and cultivate their senior market. Waterloo Region and area has its share of outstanding family-run clubs. The Peisters at Innerkip and Merry Hill, Carla and Chris Munch- Miranda at Cambridge, the Zehrs at Tavistock and the Merkirs at Grand Valley are just four groups that quick- ly come to mind. Several weeks ago I had the good fortune to discover another family- run operation while on a road trip with my old buddy, Dr. Fred. And when I say old I'm not kidding. He's a spry 90-plus. Th is time it was a road trip just north of Pricev- ille and just before you get to Flesherton off High- way 4. As I've said many times before, I love the great range of courses in the Kit-Watville area but I also love road trips and that would explain why I've played more than 1,150 courses in my 68 years of "hit the ball and chase it." Th e layout is the Highland Glen Golf Club, and surprise, surprise, it's owned and operated by a family with strong roots in our region. Tim Mitchell, a successful businessperson in K-W -- next March will mark his 25th year of oper- ating Westmount Storefronts -- is an avid fan of the game who took over the massive property three years ago. Son Justin is the manager/superintendent, daughter Nicole works weekends and wife Tina is the bookkeeper. "We've got everybody involved and that's good because it's close to our vacation home near Lake Euge- nia," Tim explained. Th e entire property for golf covers more than 200 acres. The first nine was opened in 1999 and the second nine in 2004, both designed by Jason Miller. Since Tim and family took over they've added an impressive new clubhouse which can be a celebra- tion site for folks from the many near- by towns and villages. With my golf mostly restricted to nine holes to avoid my back prob- lems of last year, I did my "Skip Golf" which is playing the odd number holes so I get a look at the whole layout. I found it challenging in spots but more than user-friendly with tee blocks at 6,035, 5,695 and 5,044 yards for the par 70 tally. Th ose are my kind of distances since old Fred continues to out-drive me on many holes. Tim, who has been a member at Deer Ridge since the beginning and was one of the founding members at Rebel Creek, said his course has nine- and 18-hole rates. Since it is only about 45 minutes from Waterloo Region, it's an easy road trip.
